Jamila J Walker, LCSW
Founder & ceo/Clinical Practice Director/therapist
So much of who I am I owe to my work as a therapist. Though I only officially began to see clients in this capacity 12 years ago, I have no doubt that the steps leading to this exact moment were predestined, preplanned and unfolding one by one since my birth. I was born to walk this path.
I love being a therapist. I love that I get to assist people in learning how to be who they were born to be. I love that for all I give, I am always gifted with that much if not more in return. I love the opportunity to learn alongside individuals, couples, and families that are unique in their own right and just like me in more ways than one. I love that I get to show up as a whole person. Flawed, imperfect and becoming and give others permission to do the same by my willingness to do so out loud.
I have a fundamental belief that everyone can heal and that we were all born with the capacity to heal ourselves. I believe that at one point or another we all have needed or will need help and that help comes in many different forms just when we need it most. I believe that self reflection is a superpower, that gratitude is a virtue and that forgiveness is living water. I believe that given the right tools, the right resources, the right information most if not all people are willing to do what it takes (the work) to learn, heal and grow. I believe that learning, healing and growing are processes that will span a lifetime. I believe we all have a right to choose.
I embrace an approach to counseling that considers adverse childhood experiences as well as the impact that everything in a person’s environment historically may have on their overall well-being. I embrace an approach that finds value in exploring and discovering the impact of trauma on a persons ability to live fully. I embrace an approach that is grounded in the principle that thoughts are connected to emotions and behaviors and that in order to change a behavior or an emotion you must first change the thought.
My intention is to walk with you down the path of self awareness, personal responsibility and change. My intention is to provide a supportive space that nurtures a sense of emotional safety and allows you to explore pain, release blockages and heal wounds. My intention is to assist you in shining the light on limiting beliefs, patterns of negative self talk and narratives that prevent you from being your best self.
I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. I received my Bachelors of Science degrees from Tennessee State University in Psychology and Africana Studies (2001) and my Master’s of Science degree in Social Work from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville (2013). I specialize in and am passionate about work with adolescents, women, couples and families and I have a diverse background and experience working with victims of crime, pregnant and parenting teens, and at-risk youth nationally and abroad.
I find joy, peace and purpose as the Owner, Clinical Practice Director and a therapist of Nashville Emotional Wellness Counseling. I balance the work by spending time with my family and friends, dancing, traveling, writing and crying in private and public spaces with familiar and unfamiliar humans. In addition to my work with NEW, I teach as an adjunct instructor at the University of Tennessee, School of Social Work in Nashville, TN.
I believe I am my ancestors WILDEST dream…
I look forward to journeying with you on what will undoubtedly be a fantastic voyage.
